From the NJ Highlands Region to the Sourland Mountains, Somerset County has a great diversity of natural resources, highlighted in preservation and open space planning efforts, tourism marketing, and sustainability efforts from the single backyard to the headwaters of the Raritan River Watershed.  Forests, fields, lakes, streams, grassways, and trails are interspersed with urban and suburban development and a growing population seeking to enjoy these natural resources. Increased stormwater runoff, invasive or destructive pests, vector-borne diseases, and wildlife management are just a few of the challenges we face. 

• Raritan River Rain Barrel Rebate Program (PDF)
  The New Jersey Water Supply Authority is partnering with The Regional Center Partnership and Manville Borough to offer rebates for residents in Manville, Bridgewater, Raritan, and Somerville to install rain barrels at their homes.
• Rutgers Environmental Stewards Program
  The Rutgers Environmental Steward program has trained volunteers on how they can take action to help solve environmental problems in their communities.
• NJ Woodland Stewards Program
  The New Jersey Woodland Stewards Program promotes sustainable stewardship of our natural resources through individuals trained on the latest forest and wildlife stewardship principles.
• The Green Knight Newsletter
  A newsletter created by Salem County Agriculture and Natural Resources that is filled with useful information regarding environmental and resource management issues and events through New Jersey.
• Rutgers Water Resources Program
  The Water Resources Program was created to identify and address community water resources issues using sustainable and practical science-based solutions.

• Hutcheson Memorial Forest Center
  The HMF Center is a unique site consisting of one of the last uncut forests in the Mid-Atlantic, as well as surrounding old fields and young forest. With more than 200 hectares of land under conservation, the HMF Center is devoted to protection of the old forest and research aimed at advancing ecological understanding.
